The steel billet undergoes preliminary rolling at this stage to form an intermediate product known as a bloom. It is essential to measure the bloom temperature as it exits the mill, to ensure product quality and protect against roller damage.
If the bloom is too cold, a product with poor surface condition and unwanted metallurgical properties may result. It will need to be sent to the reheat furnace to raise its temperature before it enters the rolling section. A short-wavelength thermometer providing constant monitoring is required.
Precision measurements will provide important information on the temperature loss from ingot to bloom, enabling closer process control and monitoring of product quality. The check will also reveal any early signs of possible roll damage.
