Air Cooling

As the glass ribbon leaves the lehr it is cooled by banks of air nozzles before being cut to size. This cooling must be uniform across the entire width of the glass. If it is not, residual stresses in the glass can cause visual distortions or breakages when it is cut.

It is important to continuously monitor the glass temperature between the air cooling section and the cutting line to avoid negative effects on the glass. This monitoring also helps detect any clogged or inactive nozzles which may be causing uneven cooling.

By identifying problems in the cooling process, the linescanner highlights any air nozzle defects and alerts plant operators to any substandard product entering the cutting line. This reduces both downtime and scrap rate. Non-contact spot measurement allows the glass to be monitored for consistent quality.
