Ammonia Burner

Nitric acid production begins with the combustion of ammonia to form nitric oxide. Continuous temperature monitoring of the catalytic platinum gauze in the ammonia burner at start-up prevents overheating. Traditional spot measurement methods don’t provide sufficient information to detect hotspots, so a solution with a wider field of view is needed.

The start-up operation is critical in a nitric acid plant, as the sudden temperature change can damage the catalyst and cause safety issues. Constantly monitoring a large area of catalytic gauze provides much closer control of the process.

By identifying hotspots in the catalytic gauze in real-time, the NIR supports continuous process safety monitoring. Early detection of these hotspots also helps prevent damage to the burner and loss of the expensive catalyst.
