LAND and Altair Collaborate to Streamline Borescope Installations with Predictive Thermal Modelling

Monday, November 3, 2025

LAND has partnered with Altair to develop a smarter, faster approach to installing borescope thermal imagers in industrial furnaces.

LAND and Altair Collaborate to Streamline Borescope Installations with Predictive Thermal ModellingThe collaboration has resulted in a new predictive modelling workflow that significantly improves installation planning, reduces risk, and enhances operational efficiency.

Accurate temperature monitoring is essential in furnace environments, where downtime and miscalculations can lead to costly delays. A key challenge in deploying LAND’s borescope cameras has been verifying whether the available cooling flows at customer sites are sufficient to protect the equipment. With multiple variables influencing cooling requirements, including furnace temperature and refractory material, traditional methods of prediction were time-consuming and complex.

To address this, LAND worked with Altair to develop a solution using reduced order modelling powered by Altair romAI™. This AI-driven tool, integrated within Altair Twin Activate®, enables rapid predictions of thermocouple temperatures based on CFD simulation data. The result is a validated model that can forecast tip temperatures in seconds, helping engineers assess cooling needs before arriving on site.

The development process involved creating a detailed CFD model of the borescope cooling system, validated against 12 physical test points. A comprehensive dataset was generated through 512 simulations, which was then used to train the romAI model. The final solution, accessed via a custom interface named FlowPro v1.0, allows users to input flue gas temperatures and cooling flow parameters to instantly predict thermocouple and outlet water temperatures.

This new workflow empowers LAND’s design engineers to manage thermal predictions independently without the need for specialist CFD expertise. It simplifies the installation process, improves forecasting accuracy, and supports better planning of capital and operational costs for customers.

By integrating advanced simulation with accessible tools, LAND continues to deliver innovative solutions that support safer, more efficient industrial operations.
