Glass International October 2024 - Temperature Measurement Solutions to Optimise Glass Production

Monday, October 21, 2024

In our recent article in the Glass International Magazine, Philippe Kerbois outlines how temperature measurement solutions can optimise glass furnace applications.

Temperature Measurement Solutions to Optimise Glass ProductionOver the past six years, AMETEK Land has sold more than 200 Near Infrared Borescope (NIR-B) thermal imaging systems for glass furnace applications.

The NIR-B radiometric thermalcamera offers calibrated, traceable temperature measurements directly comparable to the industry-standard Cyclops C100L portable single-point thermometer, widely used by operators globally to monitor and confirm furnace temperatures.

This achievement is remarkable. We began from scratch, initially focusing on furnace temperatures, where the NIR-B thermal camera serves as a more advanced alternative to the visual cameras traditionally used.

Temperature Measurement Solutions to Optimise Glass ProductionOur real-time, in-furnace thermal imaging using NIR-B Glass has been instrumental in optimising furnace operations and combustion efficiency. This was our first step toward decarbonising oil or natural gas-fired glass furnaces, although we did not specifically use the term ‘decarbonisation’ at the time.

With the expertise we’ve gained since, coupled with the launch of a portable version of our NIR-B thermal imaging solution, we are now poised to contribute considerably to reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.

Glass is ubiquitous in our lives, and the market is vast, with numerous production sites globally. I quickly realised that our success hinges on several factors: product quality, the value of our solutions, operational efficiency and customer satisfaction built on trust. By fostering collaboration, we have not only met these challenges but exceeded expectations.
