Agricultural wastes such as straw and olive mill waste contain a lot of energy and have the potential to provide fuel for green power generation.

However, the combustion of biomass as fuel poses problems that are not present in traditional coal- or gas-fired boilers. Inconsistent fuel feeds, slagging and other operational difficulties are exacerbated by the nature of many biomass fuels.

Understanding the conditions within the boiler is, therefore, essential for efficient and safe operation. Stoker-fired boilers are commonly used for biomass applications with thermal capacities below 50 MW. In these boilers, the fuel is fed by a stoker onto the grate, where it is ignited by heat from the refractory above.
